A Clinical Study of Thyroid Cancer in Korea

Abstract
This report represents a clinical study of 360 cases of carcinoma of the thyroid which were histologically diagnosed and treated at the department of the surgery and radiotherapy of the Cancer Research Hospital during the period from Jan. 1. 1996 to Sept. 30, 1976.
These 360 cases were analysed in regards to age and sex distribution, duration of disease, clinical features, pathological findings. the method of surgical treatment, radiotherapy, radiotherapeutic complication and prognosis.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. Thyroid cancer was prevalent in third to fifth decades of life, Of these 92 cases were found in the third decade(25.6% of all)
2. Average age was 45.
3. The thyroid cancer was predominant in females(3.9 : 1)
4. The most common symptoms and sign were a palpable mass or masses in the thyroid.
5. The main site of origin was the right lobe(43.6%)
6. Eighty seven cases(74.4%) were within normal limit in I^(131) uptake study.
7. Histologically, papillary adenocarcinoma was prevalent in both sexs(49.4% of all cases)
8. One hundred forty seven case(147)(40.8%) were underwent subtotal thyoidectomy, neck dissection in 4 cases(12.5%)
9. Additional post operative radiation was carried out in 283 cases, with total tumor doses of 5,000 rads in 109 cases(30.3%), 6,000 rads or more in 95 cases(26.4%) respectively. The most frequent radiotherapeutic complication was found in decreased salivation which was found in 46 cases(51%)
10. The ten year survial rate was 88.9% by surgical procddure and additional post operative radiotherapy.
